The foundation of a strong professional career is laid long before the first job interview. In 2019, we partnered with the "Let's Discuss (LDC)" initiative at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) to engage young people at a highly formative stage of their lives.
01. The Challenge
University students often lack practical self-awareness. They are focused entirely on their GPAs, usually neglecting the vital, transferable soft skills such as communication, resilience, and personal branding that are ultimately required to navigate the post-university world.
"Self-awareness is the bedrock of career longevity. Who you are determines how far your degree will actually take you.
02. The Approach
Self-Discovery
Guiding students through practical frameworks to understand their personality types and working styles.
Transferable Skills
Translating academic experiences into highly marketable professional competencies.
We structured a highly interactive youth program that eschewed traditional lecturing. Instead, we used practical exercises to build self-awareness, helping students identify their innate strengths and potential blind spots. We then mapped these personal traits to transferable skills that would make them highly competitive in the job market, regardless of their specific course of study.
03. The Results
-
Enhanced practical self-awareness and confidence among participating students.
-
Equipped youth with a clear roadmap for early-career transitioning.
-
Successfully introduced foundational people-management and project-management principles to young leaders.
